​When I started in 2004, I went all-in for organic traffic. That was for several reasons. First, my economy didn't allow paid ads. That was completely wrong as paid ads are supposed to make you more money. Maybe the idea was that I didn't know how to do a paid advertisement.
 
Now, when I think about those years, it was a goldmine. You could send traffic directly to affiliate offers, and the click cost was meager.

Another reason was that I was interested in organic traffic. SEO fascinated me, and I wanted to learn everything about it. SEO was also pretty easy back then.

I was among the first to publish a blog, and I ranked for very competitive keywords. What I didn't understand was that general keywords don't convert. That is a discussion for another article.

I stayed with organic traffic for many years, too many probably. There are some tricky problems with organic traffic:

  • It can take months to see the effects of your work.
  • Google changes algorithms often.
  • You can't scale your business.
  • It is time-consuming.

With that said, I still recommend paid traffic for some businesses and in a certain way — more about that in another article.

​What about paid advertising then?

Yes, there are certainly some difficulties with paid ads as well:

  • Rising competition leads to high click-costs.
  • Bad advertising strategies leads to poor results.
  • Getting a positive ROI most often need expert advice.
  • Sales depend on trust, and that is difficult to get with a small ad.

But when you get everything right, the sky is the limit. The ad-cost is affordable, and the conversions are high. You can scale your business as much as you can handle.
